The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating reports of a diarrheal illness caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium among individuals who swam at Foss Swim School.

Symptoms of cryptosporidiosis usually include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and a low-grade fever. People typically become ill about a week after exposure, but this period can range from 2-14 days. Fortunately, most people recover completely from their diarrhea in 1-2 weeks without any specific treatment. If you have any concerns about your symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider.

We would really appreciate if you answered a few questions regardless of whether you have been sick or not. Your participation can help us identify what may have caused these illnesses and prevent future illnesses.

Good hygiene, including frequent hand washing with soap and water, is the best way to prevent the parasite from spreading. Additionally, people with symptoms of cryptosporidiosis should not be bathed with others or go swimming until 2 weeks after diarrhea has stopped.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 651-201-5414 or health.water@state.mn.us. Thank you for your assistance!
